In the days immediately after the Gulf War, a group of American soldiers come across a secret Iraqi map, which discloses the whereabouts of a bunker where Iraq is storing stolen gold and treasure from Kuwait. The soldiers hope to take the gold and keep it for themselves. However, when they arrive at the site, they discover that the Iraqi army is more concerned about persecuting its civilians than stopping them from stealing the gold. They learn that the civilians have been encouraged by the U.S. government to rise up and fight Sadaam Hussein, but are facing certain execution because the U.S. military refuses to help them. This incident creates a crisis of conscience for the American soldiers. Do they take the money and run, leaving the civilians to face certain death at the hands of the Iraqi army? Or do they risk losing the gold in order to escort them to safety across the border into Iran?

&quot;Three Kings&quot; is not only a post-Vietnam War movie about a post-Vietnam war but it&#39;s post-movies about the Vietnam War, where we already expect that the GIs are lost in the internal politics of the land they &quot;save&quot; and their biases and perceptions are not only useless but dangerous as well. It reminded me of the Thomas J. Friedman&#39;s insight in &quot;From Beirut to Jerusalem &quot;where he said the GIs in Beirut were like &quot;Betty Crocker in hell.&quot; <br/><br/>George Clooney again plays Bogey much as he did in &quot;Out of Sight.&quot; Once again he has to make the crucial decision of personal benefit vs. altruism with the plot building in a complicated but inexorably convincing way for us to see how he got to that crossroads and why he makes his choice.<br/><br/>Ice Cube and Mark Wahlberg were also surprisingly good (including a opening shot of Marky Mark that refers to his previous career). The cinematography is intrinsic to the story, blinding us with the desert sun and the claustrophobia of bunkers.<br/><br/>This is certainly a thinking person&#39;s action movie. My 15 year old son and his friends got around the &quot;R&quot; restriction by having one of the kids use a credit card to buy the tickets from a machine. This is one of those times where I don&#39;t mind him watching the violence because the violence was subservient to important themes and moral conflicts, particularly as all the violence had specific physical consequences.<br/><br/>(originally written 10/18/1999)
First of all let me just say that I don&#39;t normally watch Gulf War or War movies in general especially giving the current status in Iraq I feel that no one is to blame for that apart from America it-self. However having said that my fears were totally quashed whilst watching Three Kings as most of it was actually built on factual information of the horrors caused by Saddam and his regime during the first Gulf War. Three Kings follows the tail of oddly enough 4 U.S. soldiers who go about to steal a gold Kuwaiti bullion from right underneath Saddam&#39;s nose. The film start&#39;s of as a roller coaster of jokes and wise cracks but then changes gears very quickly as the adventure unfolds and I guess thats what keeps the audience hooked on it. The acting from everyone was very good and the scenery costume etc was all well done giving it that stylish look to it as you would see on the news. To sum it up, keep your political opinions to ones side giving the current state of Iraq and check this movie as entertainment value and nothing else although it seems a little dated by now and it does drag in places but it is still good time pass/fantasy.<br/><br/>THREE KINGS 8.8 OUT OF 10<br/><br/>IN A WAR WITHOUT HEORES , THERE ARE KINGS!

Clooney had previously confronted Russell over his alleged harsh behavior towards extras on set, including ignoring a woman who suffered a seizure while he set up a shot.
